Our study examines the recruitment of four religious higher education institutions from the peripheral higher education reigon, Eastern border of the EU, in comparison with public higher education institutions with the same field of study (N=922). We hypothesized that there are differences between the students in the sectors in terms of both religious and social comosition. According to our results, since religiosity and social status are related in different ways in the region, it is necessary to examine the composition and characterisitcs of religious and non-religious students separately in both sectors. Our results show that the examined religious higher education institutions in the region do not select according to either social status or religiosity, they promote the social mobility of low-status students who are underrepresented in higher education.
