Conclusion: Increasing the size of an atlas database within achievable ranges would be insufficient on its own for consistently perfect single atlas auto-contouring, even in the presence of a "perfect" atlas selection method. Thus, improvements in the underlying methods for pre-and postprocessing, such as deformable registration or multi-atlas fusion, are necessary to improve the results of atlas-based auto-contouring.
