To study a possibility of using recombinant human erythropoietin (r-HuEPO) for the prevention and treatment of anemia associated with surgical operations, rats were phlebotomized and effects of administration of r-HuEPO on subsequent anemia were observed. Injection of r-hEPO prior or subsequent to blood-letting amounting 1% of body weight prevented or accelerated the recovery from anemia.
