An example i s t h e a r r a c h i d i c a c i d CH (CH ) COOHa s s t u r a t e d f a t t y e c i d , c o n s t i t u e n t of p h o s p h o l i p i d e s . 3~t 'r&%rn gemperature, i t i s a white c r y s t a l l i n e powder, but w i t h i n 70 -75,3 C i t e x h i b i t s a smect i c C mesomorphism (Fig.1.a). The a r r a c h i d o n i c a c i d -an u n s a t u r a t e d f a t t y ecid ( f o u r double c h a i n s a t 5,8,11 and 14 C) -i s a c o n s t i t u e n t of the b j o l o g i c a l menbrane en2 a f o r e r u n n e r of t Q e p r o s t a g l e n d i n e s .
