This study examines the possibility of higher education curriculum at work within the role of an autonomous mine controller. Advances in technology, skills currency and work demand in autonomous mine control rooms have contributed to a resources gap in the domain. Assessing the academic validity of the role can provide an opportunity to lead the way in work-based learning. In reviewing the application of higher education degrees at work, the paper also examines new methods of delivery, such as
