Abstract Education of the students with physical disability and illness is, according to the traditional defi nition of prof. Kábele (1992) , is one of the specialisation of the Czech special education. In this article, we will deal with some of the current transformations and possibilities of a further development of this specialisation. We will refl ect its contemporary terminology, the phe nomenon of handicap and health, the specifi cs of its clientele, the competences of teachers, the interdisciplinary cohesion and the integrity of the discipline itself. In the end, we will sum up the infl uence of the current shifts on the necessary alternation for university studies in the fi eld of special education. 106
