He worked in Hollywood for a year as production assistant to an American director. NOT so long ago, in the days when the British film industry was given over to the making of "quota quickies," there was a producer who was in the habit of remarking to script writers: "Put 'em all in evening dress for Chrisake-it doesn't cost us any more!"
