Observation of tear film changes after acute conjunctivitis treatment in children

誗AIM: To investigate tear film changes in children after acute conjunctivitis were treated. 誗METHODS: A perspective cohort study was conducted. Sixty-four acute conjunctivitis cases (64 unilateral eyes) this study. Other tear film factors which could affect the conditions of dry eye were excluded. The height of tear meniscus, fluorescein staining (FL) , tear film break up time (BUT) and Schirmer 玉 test (S 玉 t) were checked and measured on both recovered eye and healthy eye of the patients at 3,
more » ... 7, 14 and 30d after recovery, respectively. 誗 RESULTS: The height of tear meniscus was 0郾 43 依 0郾 18mm in healthy eyes, 0郾 25 依 0郾 11mm, 0郾 23 依 0郾 13mm, 0郾 34 依 0郾 26mm in cured eyes at 3, 7 and 14d, all significantly lower than that in healthy eyes (t =-24郾 364,-24郾 042,-8郾 398,P<0郾 05) , but that at 30d (0郾 44依0郾 06mm) was not different (t = 1郾 987, P>0郾 05). FL scored 1郾 27依0郾 96 in healthy eyes, those of cured eyes were 2郾 13依0郾 75, 5郾 56 依2郾 28, 4郾 21依0郾 91 at 3, 7 and 14d, significantly higher than that in healthy eyes (t = 6郾 437, 18郾 303, 20郾 386; P < 0郾 05) ; but that at 30d was 1郾 81依2郾 13 without difference (t = 1郾 44, P>0郾 05). BUT was 13郾 33 依 2郾 75s in healthy eyes, those of cured eyes were 5郾 46依0郾 9s, 6郾 34依1郾 75s, 7郾 72依1郾 77s at 3, 7 and 14d, significantly lower than that in healthy eyes (t =-50郾 731,-50郾 522,-38郾 706; P< 0郾 05) ; but that at 30d was 12郾 07依2郾 23s without difference (t =-1郾 470, P>0郾 05). S玉T was 14郾 07依 3郾 84mm / 5min in healthy eyes, those of cured eyes were 8郾 03依1郾 79, 11郾 28依2郾 33, 12郾 59依 2郾 56mm / 5min at 3, 7 and 14d, significantly lower than that in healthy eyes (t =-20郾 892,-9郾 104,-6郾 710; P<0郾 05) ; but that at 30d was 13郾 57 依 3郾 46mm / 5min without difference (t =-0郾 969, P > 0郾 05). 誗CONCLUSION: The short-term tear film instability and reversible dry eye might be arisen in children after acute conjunctivitis recovery. Considering the drug side effects to the tear film and minimizing the unnecessary use of drugs, however, dry eye can be avoided during the treatment of acute conjunctivitis.
