Nikolaeva, 8, room 205, Novosibirsk, 630090, doctor of philological sciences, leading researcher of the folklore sector of the peoples Abstract: The paper is devoted to the analysis of the cultural semantics of the Altai toponym in shamanic mythology and ritualism, the epos and song lyrics of the Altai people. A linguistic conceptualsemantic method is used in the study of this onim, the essence of which is to identify the cultural meanings contained in the concept-word, taking into account the ethnic and cultural context. The analysis involved folk texts recorded since the beginning of the twentieth century. The mythologization of the toponym Altai is associated with the traditions of the ancient Turks, with the cult of the mountains and shamanism. Altai is understood as the center between the worlds in the horizontal and vertical dimensions, the heavenly sphere, where the pure mountain spirits of the home dwell. Appeal to Altai, as well as to Jer-su, was an obligatory part of shamanic mysteries. The modern folklore of Altaians reflect the shamanic mythology, according to which Altai has its own master spirit (Altai Eezi), which protects the people and the surrounding nature from evil and injustice. The toponym acquires the status of the theonym Altai-kuday in the cult texts of followers of Burkhanism (white faith, Buddhism) at the beginning of the twentieth century, which was influenced by monotheism.
