The biological sciences have seen tremendous progress over the last decades -sequencing the human genome is just one example -and biology has been proclaimed to be the scientific discipline of the 21 st century [1]. These advances have been enabled through tools developed by physicists. Light and light-based technologies, in particular, have been of utmost importance to this progress.
