... men. Even so, the contribution of Qasim Amin in the process of family law reform happening in the Muslim world can be traced from his idea of social reform project (al-Is}la>h} al-ijtima>i). For Amin, the process of social reform would only be successful if there is a family law has been updated and brought in line with the demands of the times. The ideas of family law reform, primarily on three crucial themes, marriage, polygamy, and divorce, have been said in Amin's first work, Tah}ri>r al-mar'ah (1899). [Tulisan ini mencoba mendiskusikan dua hal. Pertama, sejarah pembaruan hukum keluarga di dunia Muslim. Kedua, kontribusi pemikiran Qasim Amin terhadap proses pembaruan hukum keluarga yang terjadi di dunia Muslim. Proses pembaruan hukum keluarga di dunia Muslim tidak lahir dari ruang kosong. Pembaruan tersebut lahir atas adanya kenyataan bahwa hukum keluarga konvensional sudah tidak sesuai dengan tantangan zaman. Sedang tujuan fundamental dari pembaruan hukum keluarga Islam adalah untuk mengangkat status perempuan. Pun demikian, kontribusi Qasim Amin dalam proses pembaruan hukum keluarga yang terjadi di dunia Muslim bisa dilacak dari proyek reformasi sosial (al-Is}la>h} al-Ijtima>'i) yang beliau gagas. Bagi Amin, proses reformasi sosial hanya akan berhasil jika hukum keluarga yang ada sudah diperbarui dan diselaraskan dengan tuntutan zaman.
