The charge distribution in mica-type layer silicates, which are capable of intercrystalline swelling, is discussed on the basis of a statistical model. The model explains the distribution of exchangeable cations and water molecules onto the geometrically identical lattice sites and simplifies the calculation of the electrostatic interaction energy between adjacent layers.
