... as a system. We characterized the concept of "language system", the essence of holo-partitive connections between the levels of the language system and units of its subsystems is substantiated. We found that the origins of the systematic approach to language analysis, in the structure of which phonetic, morphological, word-forming, and syntactic levels were distinguished, date back to ancient Indian and ancient scientific linguistic traditions. The first attempt to systematize and structure language elements, to highlight the role of sound types as language units in this process is Port-Royal's "Universal Rational Grammar". We proved that F. de Saussure developed the scientific concept of a systematic approach to the study of language, in which he distinguished the concepts of phonetics and phonology. Based on psychological and social aspects, I. Baudouin de Courtenay theoretically substantiated the theory of language as a system, the elements of which make up an integral formation and connected with each other by regular relations. He proved that the language system determines the phoneme functioning as a sound psychological representative. L. Shcherba's enriched teaching about the language system, distinguishing between linguistic and psychological approaches to the characterization of sound types.
