The left regular representation A of a locally compact group G generates a W*-algebra 91(A), and each topological automorphism â of G has a natural extension to an automorphism à of 91 (X). It is proved that an automorphism ß of 91(A) is of the form ß = à for a e Aut(G) iff ß leaves a certain cone in 91(A) invariant.
