This study deals with the handling of medical waste at the Surgical Center of a University Hospital in the State of São Paulo. The study was elaborated through non participant observation and interviews. The observations about medical waste handling were realized at the Operation Room, Sterile Material Center and Post-Anaesthetic Recovery. We also interviewed nursing assistants, nursing technicians, service aids, nurses, surgical instrumentalist and nursing attendants who work in this area. The
more » ... medical waste created at the study site belonged to: Group A -infectious, Group B -chemical and Group D -common. Authors verified that waste conditioning packages and recipients, transportation cars, individual protection equipment and external storage are in accordance with legislation.
