Since 2001, World Health Organization has been recom-mending exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond. [1] Most of the mothers want to breastfeed for a long time for the purposes of feeding their babies, protecting them against infections and having the emotional satisfaction of breastfeeding. Turkish Population and Health Survey 2013 showed that 33.9% of 20-23month-old babies were breastfed and the mean lactation period for all children born within three years before 2013 was 16.7 months. [2] According to the data of the same survey, 18% of the deliveries in Turkey occurred less than 24 months after the previous delivery. [2] According to these data, we should observe a consider- Özet: Laktasyon döneminde gebelik ve lohusal›k Annelerin bebeklerini emzirdikleri süre uzad›kça, tekrar gebe kald›k-lar›nda halen emziriyor olma ihtimalleri artmaktad›r. Çal›flmalar laktasyon döneminde oluflan gebeliklerde düflük, preterm do¤um ve intrauterin geliflme k›s›tlanmas› riskinin artmad›¤›n› göstermektedir. Bununla beraber, gebe anne laktasyona devam etti¤inde do¤acak be-be¤in do¤um a¤›rl›¤› azal›yor gibi durmaktad›r. Literatürde emziren gebelerin günlük kalori, protein, vitamin ve mineral ihtiyac›n› gösteren bir k›lavuza rastlanmam›flt›r, fakat gebe olup da süt veren annelerin enerji, protein, vitamin, mineral ve su ihtiyaçlar›n›n artt›¤›n› göz önüne almak gerekir. Bu konudaki veriler gebelikte emzirmenin güvenli oldu¤u yönünde olsa da, mevcut çal›flmalar gebelik döneminde laktasyonun ne anneye/fetüse/bebe¤e zararl› oldu¤unu, ne de üçü için de tamamen güvenli oldu¤unu kan›tlayabilmektedir.
