A B S T R A C T Across the world, hunting is one of the main causes of the decline in populations of wild vertebrates. This activity has serious effects not only on the specific, target populations but also on the dynamics and structures of other animal populations. Often the only evidence available for successful prosecution of poachers is in the form of small pieces of skin, bone, and meat. In such cases, forensic investigations can irrefutably establish the identity of the species involved
