One of the earliest attempts to create a system capable of reading texts was created in 1870. It was a retina scanner, the work of which was based on photocells. Later Fourier d'Albe's Optophone appeared in 1912 and Thomas tactile relief device in 1926. Optical text reading systems appeared in the middle of the twentieth century as a result of the digital computers development.
