Wireless Sensor Networks are collection of number of small and spatially distributed autonomous devices called Sensor Nodes. These nodes are able to sense, can do computations and perform wireless communications but have limited resources available for their operation. Due to this, the routing protocol of wireless sensor network must minimize the energy consumption so as to increase the network lifetime. In this paper, we are providing an introduction to wireless sensor networks, the need for reducing the energy consumption in wireless sensor networks and some of the already implemented energy efficient routing protocols for wireless sensor networks.
