This article substantiates the urgency of studying visual culture. It shows that visual culture is associated with the reflection of surrounding visual environment, creation of new visual images and transformation of visual reality. The authors make some attempts to examine a number of theoretical and methodological problems associated with this phenomenon. They demonstrate the connection of social experience and personal visual culture. This paper also considers the structure and functions of the visual environment.
