It is the aim of this thesis to look closely on the understanding, that Saint Boniface, also known as the "Germans' Apostle" or "The Greatest Englishman", had on church and mission, in reference to his letters. This thesis is therefore, focused on the content of his letters which provide a wide range of details about his understanding of church und mission. A detailed analysis of historical sources in this work would exceed by far, the requirements of a Master's thesis. While the first part of
more » ... his work deals with the missionary's historical context (Francia in the Early Middle Ages) as well as on the life and career of Boniface – from being a monk to becoming one of the most influential churchmen of his time, – deals the second part about Boniface' self-understanding as a missionary. This enables the Analysis the inner disposition of the missionary at one hand, whereas on the other hand his missionary successes, that culminated in reform councils, such as the famous Concilium Germanicum (742) which finds till today a resonance in historical scholarship.
