Evaluation of fuel impurity effects on solid oxide fuel cell performance [report]

The effects of various fuel and air impurities on the performance of tubular solid oxide fuel cells have been examined. Two-cell SOFC tests were conducted using simulated coal gas contaminated with 1 ppm H 2 S, 1 ppm HCl, and 5000 ppm NH 3 . Of these only H 2 S was found to have a significant effect. Another two-cell test was conducted in which the effect of SiO 2 carryover into fuel electrode was examined. Testing was also conducted to investigate the effects of copper on nickel containing
