Field experiment was conducted "Identification of suitable bedding materials for raising mat nursery under MSRI" during rabi 2013-14 and 2014-15 consecutively at Regional Agricultural Research station, Tirupati, Chittoor district, ANGRAU with an objective to find out the suitable bedding material for raising mat nursery and to evaluate the varietal growth of the seedlings suitable for machine transplanting of rice. The treatments consisting of five varieties BPT -5204, NLR 34449, MTU 1010, NLR

Among the nursery bed materials in combination with soil, significantly highest root length was recorded with FYM followed by red soil + coconut peat with paddy variety MTU-1010 at 15 DAS closely followed by NLR 3041. Red soil + press mud cake recorded the highest shoot length followed by red soil + groundnut shells. Interaction effect of varieties and bedding materials showed that highest shoot length was recorded with paddy variety MTU 1010 sown on press mud cake with red soil can be recommended under MSRI.
