Acute post surgical pain is a common complication following breast cancer surgeries. It is an independent risk factor for chronic pain following breast cancer surgery.Various analgesic techniques are available to treat post operative pain. Intravenous and oral opioids are one of the mainstays in the management of early post operative pain. Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic opioid. It is an agonist-antagonist of opioid receptors, 25 to 40 times more potent analgesic than morphine.Sublingual

Our feasibility study demonstrates that sublingual buprenorphine appears to a safe and efficacious analgesic in managing acute postoperative pain after mastectomy.Well designed studies needs to be conducted to establish its safety and efficacy when compared to conventional opioids like morphine and tramadol.
