The concerted activities of kinases and phosphatases modulate the phosphorylation levels of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates in eukaryotic cells. Despite considerable effort, we are still missing a holistic picture representing, at a proteome level, the functional relationships between kinases, phosphatases and their substrates.
