A bstract This article describes dynamical equations for cracks in strips. After ® rst ® nding the stress and strain ® elds around a crack moving at constant velocity, the equations are then extended to cracks which accelerate very slowly. Assuming that the motion of cracks is restricted to a line, these calculations show them to be stable, unless the fracture energy that they require to advance is a decreasing function of their velocity.
