In course of its dynamic evolution during the last three decades, the area of motion control has grown as diverse interdisciplinary technology. The frontier of this technology has taken a new dimension with the advent of today's powerful microcomputers, VLSl circuits, power integrated circuits, and advanced computer-aided design (CAD) techniques. The paper gives a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art motion control technology in which the salient technical features of electrical machines, power electronic circuits, microcomputer control, VLSI circuits, machine controls and computer-aided design techniques have been discussed, and wherever possible, appropriate trends of the technology have been indicated.
