MEROPENEM IN SKIN INFECTION

The clinical efficacy of meropenem (MEPM), a new carbapenem antibiotic, was studied in 8 patients: 5 with secondary infection and one each with phlegmon, chronic pyoderma and erysipelas. Clinical response to MEPM was excellent in 3 cases, good in 2, fair in 2 and poor in 1, showing an efficacy rate of 62.5%. Bacteriologically, 5 of 7 strains isolated from 7 patients were eradicated after treatment with MEPM. No adverse reactions were observed, but slight elevation of GOT, GPT and ALP in one
