Abstract: I'm interested in exploring the interaction between two texts which provide a first person testimony on the vicissitudes of the insular slavery, even though they were produced at two different moments of Cuban history. My objective is to study the possible links between The autobiography of a slave (1835) by Juan Francisco Manzano, and Biography of a Cimarron (1966) by Miguel Barnet 2 . In my opinion, such links cannot be ignored by those who are not only interested in first person texts and the configuration of a Cuban literary system, but also in the political, social, and cultural fluctuations proper of an enclave economy, slave trade, and strong situations of colonialism.
