In 1920 Seares 1 made an estimate of the surface brightness of the galaxy in the region of the sun as viewed from a distant point in a direction normal to the galactic plane. From the distribution and luminosity functions of the stars determined by Kapteyn and van Rhijn, he found a surface brightness of 23 visual magnitudes per square second.
