In solid mechanics, size effect is very often observed. This lecture provides a brief overview of two sorts of size effect: size effect on the structural strength observed at the macro-scale and size effect on elasticity and fracture observed at the micro-scale on porous materials. Both size effects are investigated with the same methodology, that is the help of up-scaling techniques : lattice approaches at the meso-to-macro scale and molecular mechanics at the nano-to-micro scale. more » ... scaling techniques provide ways to account for material heterogeneities and for surface effects that are at the origin of these size effects. In the two examples discussed in this contribution, accurate constitutive relations and continuum models at the macro-scale remain a very open issue, without the help of up-scaling. The methodology and results discussed in this paper may enlighten future extended continuum theories.
