Groundwater flooding has been shown to be a significant component of the risk from flooding in the UK. Its inclusion within the EU Floods Directive highlights the need to understand more about the processes that control groundwater flooding and to define the associated risk. In this paper the main groundwater flooding scenarios are described and the challenges in estimating return periods and mapping risk set out.
