Capability of the CERES-Barley Model for Prediction of Barley Varieties Growth under Deficit Irrigation

Crop simulation models are widely used for optimizing crop production management. To evaluate the performance of CERES (Crop Environment Resource Synthesis)-barley model on five barley cultivars, a split-plot experiment based on a randomized complete block design with four replications was done at Research Field of Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Islamic Azad University-Karaj Branch, Karaj, Iran, during 2010-2011. During the growing season, dry matter and leaf area index is continuously measured and model was calibrated regarding the obtained results. Evaluation analysis showed that Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) estimated for dry matter and grain yield were 2484 and 483 kg ha-1 under optimal irrigation conditions, respectively. CERES-barley model predicted LAI (Leaf Area Index) satisfactorily as well. CERES-barley model provided very satisfactory estimates, so that R2 for stress conditions between observed and predicted dry matter and LAI was 0.95 and 0.88, respectively. With respect to satisfactory simulations of CERES-barley model, this model can be used for the research purposes and management programs in Karaj region.
