CD21low age-associated or atypical memory B cells, enriched for autoantibodies and poised for plasma cell differentiation, accumulate in large numbers in chronic infections, autoimmune disease and immunodeficiency, posing the question of what checkpoints normally oppose their excessive accumulation.
