The fact is, more assessments are based on the opposite (regionalism); it's mean that in the early days of the hadith narration there were conflicts between one region to anothers, so that the narrators of the region refused to narrate from another regions. For example, the conflicts occurred between the narrators of Medina and Iraq or between Iraq and Syria. Secondly, a lot the terms have evolved over time, thus there occured various meanings among them. Therefore, through this article the writer will try to criticize this opinion and examine the level of Juynboll understanding to the methods of ahl h} adi> ts analysis, especially on the issue of al-jarh} wa al-ta'di> l. Afterward, seeing to what extent the actual accuracy of the criticism is given by orientalist (in this case Juynboll) to the method of ahl h} adi> ts. Abstrak Orientalis mempunyai anggapan bahwa metode ahli hadis hanya terfokus pada analisis sanad. Lebih dari itu, mereka juga mengkritisi metode analisis sanad tersebut dan menganggapnya problematis. Selain sepakat dengan para pendahulunya mengenai tidak komprehensifnya metode ahli hadis, Juynboll juga mengemukakan argumen bahwa metode analisis sanad yang diterapkan ahli hadis bermasalah. Ilmu al-jarh} wa al-ta'di> lyang merupakan aspek terpenting dalam analisis sanad-menurut Juynboll sangat problematis, alasannya bisa dilihat dari dua sebab; pertama, standar penilaian perawi yang digunakan tidak objektif. Indikasinya adalah banyak penilaian yang hanya didasarkan kepada ketidaksukaan terhadap suatu daerah (regionalism); maksudnya di masa awal periwayatan hadis terdapat pertentangan antara satu daerah dengan daerah lain, sehingga para perawi dari satu daerah tidak mau meriwayatkan hadis dari daerah lain. Seperti pertentangan yang terjadi antara perawi Madinah dan Irak, atau antara perawi Irak dan Syiria. Kedua, banyak istilah yang mengalami perkembangan makna sehingga maksudnya bisa berbeda-beda. Untuk itu, melalui artikel ini penulis berupaya mengkritisi pendapat tersebut dan akan menguji tingkat pemahaman Juynboll terhadap metode analisis ahli hadis, terutama dalam masalah al-jarh} wa al-ta'di> l. Sehingga nantinya akan terlihat sejauh mana sebenarnya akurasi kritikan yang diberikan orientalis (dalam hal ini Juynboll) terhadap metode ahli hadis.
