This study evaluated the immunomodulatory pattern of cytokine in adolescent infected with plasmodium falciparum, using observational longitudinal design. The study was carried out in Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Medical services Akpajo, Port Harcourt Rivers State, with the aim of evaluating the changes in cytokine level among adolescent with Plasmodium falciparum. A total of 91 adolescents participated in this study, comprising of 61 (67.0%) subjects with mild to moderate malaria

Cytokine level such as IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF were assayed by using Elab science reagent ELISA method, while malaria parasite diagnosis was done using RDT, quantitative buffy coat for malaria parasite and thick blood film, infected subject were treated with antimalaria drug. There were statistically significant increase in the mean value of IL-6, TNF and IL-8 in test group compared to control group at baseline. Comparison of male and female showed statistically significant increase in TNF, and IL-8 for male compared to female. After treatment there were significant decrease in TNF, IL-6 and IL-8 P < 0.05. Gender effect showed statistically significant increase in TNF and IL-8 in male compared to female. Others showed no significance. This study reveals several changes in cytokine such as tumor necrosis, interleukin-6, interleukin-8 which were all increased in malaria infection and could exacerbate disease condition.
