An Assesment of Using Audio and Videotapes in a Lab Classroom

Improving listening comprehension and oral English have always been the objective of the lab course designed for the freshmen and sophomores at Soochow University. Since the beginning of the last academic year, there has been a dramatic change in the curriculum-the replacing of traditional audiotapes with videotapes as the core text ma terials. A survey of 2,974 students w ho had experience in Lab Courses I & II using aud iotapes and videotapes respectively will be described and examined statistically in some detail. After reporting the p rimary results of the surveys, implica tions for the lab course in the university will be further discussed.
