This master thesis deals with the topic of cartographic label placement and the automation of this very time-consuming step in the production of maps. At the beginning, the theoretical principles of map labels and labelling rules are explained, which serve as a basis for the practical part of this thesis. ... nd discussed. This is achieved by using data and documents provided by the Federal Office for Surveying of Austria. Using the example of the official Austrian map series, the implementation of an automated label placement requires labelling rules for all relevant labelling classes in a selected investigation area. The methods of automatic labelling are to be tested by the implementation of this set of labelling rules, thus manual work steps should be reduced, simplified or completely automated. The results in the form of an automatically labelled topographic map are finally evaluated and are intended to provide information about the fulfilment of the requirements of labels in an official map series and indicate the approximate need for reworking of the automatically generated map labels.
