This article tries to show how marine and terrestrial practices of the Ottoman Empire gained speed and how the struggle on land and sea on a regional level acquired a global significance when a particular place – Gallipoli – was conquered and when one particular man – Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha – was employed by the state. Following this overall thesis the article draws attention to the use of Gallipoli as a central base by the Ottoman fleet over centuries due to its geo-strategic qualities. This
