Observables with linearly coupled oscillators

The theory of linear coupled oscillators as it relates to a synchrotron or storage ring is reviewed and extended. A correspondence is made between certain derived variables and physical observables. Considered in particular are the beam envelope, the filtered response to the excitation of a coherent betatron oscillation, and the influence on the transverse beam phape (i.e. the two-dimensional transverse density distribution).
