"Buckelwiesen"are special microrelief landscapes consisting of hummocks alterning with pits. They are specific geomorphological phenomenons, which have been already studied by numerous authors. However, they couldn't yet clearify the reason for the development of Buckelwiesen. Not any of the four different theories to the genesis of the the pit and mount microrelief could prevail. This study deals with two different Buckelwiesen in the Dolomites of South Tyrol, Italy. They have been analysed

Using literature research, field survey and statistical methods, data have been collected and analysed concerning morphometry, soil conditions and the relation between the pit and mount microrelief and the plant cover thereupon. Additionally, already existing data have been used. The main focus lay on the analysis of the morphometry of the different Buckelwiesen areas. The most important question was, if the morphometrical data can give indications for the genesis of Buckelwiesen. The core of this study lies in the verification, if Buckelwiesen could eventually be a phenomenon of karst formation with an initial development caused by forest. Analysis results showed that in fact karst formation is the reason for the development of Buckelwiesen. The initial genesis is caused either by wind throw or by differentiated karst formation under forest. The question about the initial development of the pit and mount microrelief has not been fully answered.
