This paper discusses the genre of the first part of the Narrative Compendium of the Pilgrim of America (1728), by Nuno Marques Pereira. Based on the evidence found in this eighteenth-century prose fiction work, it is proposed that it consists of a «pretended history», according to the conception of this genre of history that is outlined in the dialogue I of Court in the Village (1619), by Francisco Rodrigues Lobo.
