BACKGROUND: The diabetic kidney disease is one of the main complications caused by type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. This study aims to analyse the impact of the use of liraglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, in the controlling of this issue. METHODS: A narrative review was made based on articles found between the ages of 2016-2020, searched on database of LILACS and PubMed, by consulting advanced searching using the descriptors: GLP-1, liraglutide, diabetes mellitus and kidney chronic disease. RESULTS:

DISCUSSION: Studies are being done in order to identify drugs that control glycemia and are effective in preserving renal function. In this scenario, liraglutide has become evident. The drug showed good results on glycemic control, proving to be more effective compared to other drugs. In addition, positive results on obesity and blood pressure control have been shown, all of which are contributing factors to slow the progression of diabetic kidney disease. It is also important to highlight the role of liraglutide in the renal system, reducing the decline in the glomerular filtration rate and in the albuminuria values. CONCLUSION: Liraglutide has been shown to be effective in reducing the progression of chronic kidney disease in type 2 diabetic patients.
