CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF SOIL FERTIGATED WITH URBAN SEWAGE IN THE SEMIARID BRAZILIAN REGION ABSTRACT Water scarcity throughout the world driven by rapid population growth, lack of an effective management policy of water resources, and the growing production activities has fostered the development of practices which make possible a

Irriga, Botucatu, v. 18, n. 4, p. 661-674, outubro-dezembro, 2013 wastewater in agriculture emerges as a viable alternative, as this practice reduces the uptake of water of good quality for drinking consumption and the pollution of bodies of water by sewage disposal. Moreover, it has fertilizing properties. In light of these considerations, the objective of this study was to analyze chemical characteristics of soil fertigated with urban sewage cultivated with cotton in the semiarid region of Brazil. The experiments were conducted with urban sewage from a stabilization pond in Mossoró-RN. The experimental design was randomized blocks with split plots. Dilutions of wastewater reuse were tested in the plots [25% -T1, 50% -T2, 75% -T3, 100% of wastewater -T4, and water supply + mineral fertilizer in the soil T5] and 2 soils (Oxisol and Cambisol) in the subplots. The application of wastewater from sewage caused chemical changes in the soil with more clay texture (Cambisol), and calcium changes in the latosol soil. All characteristics in the Cambisol soil were altered by the levels of wastewater, except for the calcium.
