At the 4th to 6th instar stages , black larvae produced under erowded rear 三 ng walked signifieantly faster than the pale green larvae produced under individual rearing ( see Fig, 1) . 3. 111both colour types, the walki 旦 g speed was faster w 血e 皿 10 iロ div董 dllals were tested together than when individua1 larvae were tested separately . Whe 冠 apale green lam was tested with ui 夐e black larvae, the fomer walked nearly as fast as the 監 atter 。 4. When 101arvae were simultaneously dropped on a po 丘 nt of smoked paper , the 2nd and 3rd instar lavae walked inCtependently in different directions ( Fig.2B ) , while the 4th,5th and 6th instar larvae tended to walk together i塗 the same direction ( Fig。2D ) . From these results , it is co 皿 sidered that the de且s玉 ty effect result 互 ng i且 colour polymor − phism affects the actual activity of Leucania separata 正 arvae , not the potentiai walking speed .
