This master thesis is centred around Jiang Rongs literary work 狼图腾 Langtuteng and its English and German translations. These versions are accompanied by changes that were introduced during the translation process. The changes and omissions at hand are analysed and interpreted based on Andre Lefeveres theoretical approach (Lefevere 2017) who sees text-external aspects as influencing factors during the translation process. From this analysis, the translation strategies, either foreignization or
more » ... mestication, become apparent, which in turn helps to examine the legitimacy of these literary translations. The result of comparing these works revealed that Howard Goldblatt's English version differs noticeably from Karin Hasselblatt's German version. Due to the extent and intentions of the omissions by Goldblatt and the resulting interpretation, his English translation Wolf Totem is often seen as an adaption of the Chinese original 狼图腾 Langtuteng. Despite also containing changes due to the translation process and its text-external factors, Karin Hasselblatt's German version Zorn der Wölfe does not result in a significantly different interpretation of the literary work. Therefore, based on Lefevere's theoretical approach, Hasselblatt's work can be considered a literary translation. A table in which the paragraphs are compared can be found on the CD that comes with the bound master thesis.
