By analyzing the flow of goods, it is possible to identify the direction of industrial production (the global division of labor) and the imbalance in the economic structure of the country. The considered direction of analysis is especially relevant in the post-Soviet countries, to which Russia belongs, since the collapse of the Soviet Union destroyed all foreign economic relations, as a result, the newly formed republics are forced to build economic relations with the outside world from scratch. It is also necessary to highlight a feature inherent in the considered set of countries, which consists in the development of such a direction as mutual trade, i.e. trade on special conditions between members of integration international unions (for example, the CIS, the EAEU, the SCO). The quantitative study of the dynamics and structure of foreign trade operations of the Russian Federation is an urgent task for economic science in general, and statistical science in particular. Any statistical study should consist of three stages: the collection of information, its grouping and analysis. As for information on foreign economic activity, the main supplier of statistical information is the Federal Customs Service of the Russian Federation, which provides scientists, state institutions (departments) and participants in foreign economic activity with information on the flow of goods transported across the border of the Russian Federation. Using this information, it is possible to analyze the dynamics of exports and imports in absolute terms, to assess the contribution of individual regions of Russia in foreign economic activity and to identify structural shifts in the context of goods sold and purchased.
