Abstract: Dam lakes build on streams by several aims such as generation of energy, source of
... , source of drinking water, irrigation and flood control. These artifical lakes are transition ecosystems between river and stagnant water ecosystems and have characteristics of both. Dam lakes have different features then natural lakes in terms of morphometric and physico-chemical parameters. Since dam lakes are rich in nutrients transported river, there is a rapid increase of eutrophication. Blue-green algae are an indicator of eutrophication and their sudden increases creates a risk factor for public health which use them as drinking water. There are 277 dams in our country. 52 dam of them are used as drinking water supply. In this study, nineteen publications on phytoplankton were evaluated. Toxic blue-green algal species from Microcystis, Anabaena, Aphanizomenon and Oscillatoria genus were identified in several studies in these dam lakes. Their blooms were also determined in eutrophic dam lakes. But there is no study on the monitoring of toxic blue-greens. In this study, monitoring of possible toxic Cyanobacteria blooms and measures to control them were discussed.
