THF solutions of hydridomagnesium chloride (HMgCl, 1a) can be prepared in nearly quantitative yields by hydrogenation of magnesium in THF solutions of magnesium chloride at 0 °C in the presence of a CrCl3-Mg anthracene catalyst. Concentration of saturated HMgCl solutions, or hydrogenation of magnesium under the above mentioned conditions in MgCl2-THF suspensions, lead to the formation of THF solutions of species having the approximate com position HMgCl · MgH2 or 2 HMgCl · MgH2.
