The aim of this article is to look closely at the impact of external assessment in two higher education institutes with differing legal structures: the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana–Unidad Azcapotzalco and the Universidad Iberoamericana. The article analyzes university institutional change since the Mexican higher education policy of quality and financing, with a view to verifying the role played by this policy as a key detonator of institutional change in the University sphere.The article
