The aim of this article is to look closely at the impact of external assessment in two higher education institutes with differing legal structures: the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana–Unidad Azcapotzalco and the Universidad Iberoamericana. ... comprises three main parts. The first looks at the government assessment strategy as instrumental in university change. The second analyses the cases of the UAM–A and the UIA, that is to say, the relationship between each university's particular form of organization, as well as the relationship between this form and the change implemented.
